Background of the Study
Educational media, including digital videos, interactive modules, and broadcast lessons, play an influential role in shaping pragmatic competence in Nigerian classrooms. Pragmatic competence—the ability to use language effectively in context—is essential for academic success and social interaction (Okoro, 2023). In Nigeria, the integration of educational media has transformed traditional classroom discourse by introducing new pragmatic devices such as interactive questioning, turn-taking signals, and culturally adapted politeness strategies. This study compares classroom interactions in settings that heavily utilize educational media with those relying on conventional teaching methods. By observing real classroom environments and analyzing recorded interactions, the research investigates how educational media influences pragmatic behaviors such as requests, apologies, and clarifications. The study also considers how media-enhanced instruction may promote clearer communication and better student engagement, potentially leading to improved academic performance (Chinwe, 2024). Findings are expected to inform educators and policymakers about effective practices that enhance pragmatic competence through modern media integration (Afolabi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing use of educational media in Nigerian classrooms, little research has examined its impact on students’ pragmatic competence. Most existing studies focus on cognitive outcomes and content delivery, while neglecting the pragmatic aspects of classroom communication (Okoro, 2023). This gap prevents a full understanding of how media influences social language skills, which are critical for academic and interpersonal success. Without detailed analysis, it is challenging to determine whether educational media enhances or undermines pragmatic competence. This study seeks to address this gap by comparing classroom interactions with and without significant media integration, thus shedding light on its impact on pragmatic communication (Chinwe, 2024).
